Also, mobilising community can be very difficult. I share this challenge over the years, especially mobilising youth in the face of school systems which are increasingly seduced by their own "branding" in a competitive, capitalist model of education seeking to reproduce itself. In many communities, community or cultural centre activities appear to come across as competition rather than as complimentary or adjacent to school activities. Without a bridge to community, schools and school systems act as a vacuum and use culture as a marketing tool to recruit students for additional funding rather than as a part of a larger living culture with links to society.

Wow, only 10 people in your office who would know what Métis means... and 1 who would know about fur traders. Interestingly, I think anyone who has gone to French school would know immediately who and what you are referring to, or anyone my age or older. However, there is then a confusion - at least from my perspective - as to what aspects are Métis and what aspects are French (the male voyageurs traditions). But I dont think people ask these questions here in Ontario unless they are Métis and French... But the cultural references would be known to most, due this historic contact and how this history is taught, imbued with patriarchal colonialism as well, but differently from in English school systems. I find myself surprised when I learn how much is NOT known about Métis, perhaps because I come to it from two traditions, Métis in my family, and the old Canayens. I will write more about this in a proper blog... Thank you for being a catalyst in inciting critical reflection and positionality.
