I love the link you make with Voyageurs Métis and Eastern Métis and the erasure of Voyageurs as Métis versus Canadiens français. This is extremely interesting because this is the very mechanism by which Métis of French Canadian origins are denied Métis identity based on their geography. Your situated position as Métis living outside the Eastern provinces and Québec but with a connection to the East gives you an original perspective. Your critique speaks to me. In some cases, I know what is Métis and what is French and what is both... Sometimes I do not know which is which and I need to ask to check with my aunt. I do have a very clear awareness of anti-Indigenous, anti-French and anti-Métis sentiment and have strong physical and emotional responses, recently especially. The French /non-French question also affects how one relates to Voyageurs and if one grew up with this and if it was minoritised or not. The dominant /dominated positionality does not seem stable depending on one's positionality and yet the climate you point to highlights a minoritisation, especially in your region and from the national, Anglohegemonic, non-Indigenous perspective. I would love to have this conversation with you and share from our different perspectives and learn from each other. My experience is so different in growing up in this area at the convergence of Métis and French Canadian and my own shifting relatedness to these symbols as sometimes French and sometimes Métis and sometimes both. I do feel a double minorisation in light of micro-agressions on linguistic issues, and blatant intolerance, and now tragically disdain of Métis people living in QB and the East. I appreciate your anti-colonial and Indigenous analysis and your perspective of Voyageurs from a new lens. Lol... hilarious commentary of Manitoba and SK based on provincial borders.
