Lack of accountability *

Yes, this kind of racism - and sexism - occurs in Catholic schools (I taught in publicly funded Ontario Catholic schools and the immense challenge of dealing with defiance and lack of support as a teacher trying to manage and respond to this shit as an anti-racist anti-colonial educator is demoralising. Schools tend to reproduce the structures and social stratification already in existence... even if they attempt/profess to teach the opposite. Small improvements occur... trans and gay kids are getting some formal curriculum and policy support even if they are still bullied. Many kids can now come out. But... I think schools are intense and sometimes toxic places. It takes much more than university-trained teachers to deal with this, and the minimal teaching. Nothing in my education prepared me for the classroom management or even lack if accountability (and societal teacher blaming). I also had some great moments of reaching for social change... but you remember the difficult times viscerally. I share this honestly for parents to be aware... I am not sure the public realises.
